Retiring right....The Fishing Guide

"The Boomer Magazine" now delivers Monday, Wednesday and Friday editions.  We are offering a variety of topics including: Photography assignments, Retirement stories, Travel, Books, Movies, Music, Butterfly Gardening, and other "Boomer" related stories.

Mondays are work related, Wednesday's we move to a little lighter subjects and by Friday, it's time for some fun. Friday's are good days to think of interesting ways to retire. Here is the first of that series. Mike Cook has this retirement deal all figured out.  Enjoy !

Captain Mike Cook, of Rockport,Texas claims he's still working. I don't believe a word of it. He says teaching clients how to catch fish is hard work. I think we know better.

After fifteen years, Mike left Compaq Computer in 2001. His corporate world downsized. The Cooks had invested in Rockport land with a cottage in mind. The layoff sped up their plans. He was in his late forties so he figured he would work by commuting to Corpus Christi. He was surprised to learn the pay scale was a third of his Houston salary.

A couple of his buddies were charter captains. They told him he could make Corpus wages doing what he did best, fishing. From that point on, Mike's enjoyed life to the max. He says the best part is just being on the water. He likes his role as a bird watching guide as much as his fishing gig.

In June, 2010, Amy and I chartered Captain Cook for a delightful Sunday morning. I got some great fly fishing tips. Amy hooked a whopper of a Redfish. The weather was beautiful and the water like glass. The sunrise was fantastic. I was so excited about fishing I left my camera in the car.

Rockport is a fun town to visit. We found some great restaurants. During the days when we weren't fishing we explored the Texas coast. It's truly a pleasant area.

Mike has lots of fun stories about his time on the water.  When I asked Mike what he was going to do now that he was retirement age, he feigned shock. Then he said "why just keep on slaving".  It was one of those " Oh Cisco, Oh Pancho! " moments. All three of us broke up laughing.

Mike was the first of our "Retire Right" series. I think his lifestyle inspired the idea.  Enjoy !

Life's purpose is not to arrive at the grave with the body in good shape. Hell no, you want your body worn slap out, skidding in sideways, eyes bloodshot, hair smoking and all the while hollering "Yee Haw !! ...  What a ride !!"
