Last year I decided to retire. But I wanted to stay active. I wanted to do something interesting part time. I wanted to travel and make a little money.
The results ? I wasted a year in the transportation industry.
Here are just a few reasons not to get involved with pilot cars.
- Initial expense ...properly outfitted....can be upwards of several thousand bucks. My pre-paid commercial insurance was over $3500, cash.
- A late model vehicle is a necessity. Look at the picture. State laws require all that equipment and then some.
- Getting established..takes forever.. Work comes from networking. It's a who you know industry.
- Capital intensive.... poor cash flow situation.....normal auto travel expenses are high and the pay rate is very low. You pay your bills in less than thirty days..the trucking company pays when they get around to it.
- Cut throat competition..Ethics, manners and morals are in short supply in the industry. About half the truck drivers and pilot car people are nice guys...the other half are seriously socially impaired.
Hey, it sounded like fun. I thought I might finally find out what was on the other side of the hill. But ....I had no idea how base and mean an industry can be....just not my idea of a pleasant way to spend even a little of your retirement time. Not even a little bit.
