Music...Rock a Beauty...Imelda May

"Rock a Beauty" Imelda May

This blogger admits it. I am a rock and roller. Since the third or fourth grade it has been my music of choice. That does not mean I don't love many other types of music. I do. It's just that rock and roll was what I preferred as a child and maybe more importantly it was the first music to reach inside my heart and stir my soul. It was the music that moved me.

"Cry me a river" with Jeff Beck

Over the years what we called rock and roll and what the world heard as the first "rock" has been given a label, they now call our early local stuff, "rockabilly". Don't ask me why. As far as I am concerned it was rock and roll and everything that spun off of early rock needed the descriptive label.

                       "Johnny Got a Boom Boom"

But it's O.K., I'll play. You want to know what Rockabilly music was ? It was young white rockers, from the mid south primarily, playing their blues and hillbilly influences. Hell, they might as well have nicknamed early rock as rock ah blues.

                                   "Mayhem"

But today, some 60 odd years later, our childhood music, quaint as it might be to present day ears, is still being played. Thankfully, young people are playing their version of early rock. Oddly enough, those young folks are a long way from Memphis. England, Ireland and Europe have very deep "rockabilly" fan pools. If you want to hear something similar to what we within the sound of Memphis radio heard from 1955 you'll probably want to check out the UK scene. They are right on the target with the look as well as the sound.

"Tainted love" and "My baby left me"

Recently, I heard about a Jeff Beck educational television special celebrating the music of Les Paul and Mary Ford. I tuned in and get a really good dose of present day British rockabilly. Not only did Jeff Beck show off his usual rock guitar greatness, he showcased a great rock band. This band and their amazing singer, "rock a beauty", Imelda May, knocked me out.

                              "Train kept a rollin"

To say Imelda May is a throw back to 1955 would be an understatement. When she sings those old songs, she is 1955 embodied in the beauty and voice of an innocent bygone time. I was so impressed I decided to alert all my sock hop and beer run pals of so long ago.

Like few others today, Imelda May can steal Elvis's spotlight. Few singers have ever done it and fewer will. I hope you enjoy this musical discovery with us here at "The Boomer Magazine".

                       "Tiger Rag" with Jeff Beck

It has become our pleasure to share really good quality wherever we might find it. Whether in books, film, television or music, we find interesting. Some times you'll like what we recommend. Other times you'll think we've flipped our lids.

                             Humble and Proud

Imelda May is so good at what she does, we think she needs to be heard. It is important to "The Boomer Magazine" to see  "Rockabilly" live on. Imelda May carries on the vocals from the era better than any other artist we've heard in many a year.

                        "Remember" with Jeff Beck

Get your headphones ready ! Crank it up ! You are about to enter a musical time machine.

Imelda May, "Rock A Beauty", Enjoy.

Life's purpose is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, hair smoking, shouting "Holy Shit, ...what a ride!"
